Tropical Palm Trees in oil paint

GALLERY

The Canary Island Palms are my favorites because, although they are not tall like the Royal Palms, they are so majestic, interesting and highly textured. I have painted seven portraits of these palm trees.

The first series was realistic.  Everything in Florida is so lush and green, yet there is a multitude of colors reflected because of the sunshine. In the frons you can see the oranges, yellows, purples, and blues. Behind the palms a forest of greens appears almost black with its rich depth.

The beginning or end of the day are my favorite times because the setting or rising sun provides the most colorful skys, especially in Florida. In the second set of paintings I chose a color theme of rusts which really accents the greens of the palm.

The last set of palms is a rainbow of color.

The original oil paintings measure 30" x 50". Giclees on canvas or paper are available any size.

The palm tree practically says "Florida.". It certainly says "tropics". After painting several palm trees in fairly realistic colors, I rebelled in this painting which I called "Palm Candy". I wanted to try something different and play with color in a new and exciting way. I managed to capture the heat of the tropics and also the feeling I used to get when I went into a candy store. I have had a lot of reactions to this painting. People either love it or hate it. It certainly emits strong feelings.
