Water Lilies at McKee Gardens
Triptych Oil 60" x 108"  painting size

"Water Lilies at McKee Gardens" was inspired by the beautiful floating lilies at McKee Botanical Garden, Inc. which is located in Vero Beach, Florida. The garden is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a historic Florida landmark. It is a remarkable place where a system of waterways interconnect.

This is the temporarily "finished" version has been in progress for about two years. I based the painting on photographs that I had taken at the garden. The water in the photographs appeared to be black with some red and reflections of the sky and abundant vegetation. I first painted the water a dark blue. I repainted it to red and then to orange and finally to the varied colors you see here. The butterflies, alligator, fish, frogs and turtles were added later. It won an Honorable Mention at the Lighthouse Gallery & School of Art Landscape Show in 2011.

One of the earlier versions of it is pictured at the bottom of the page.

Water Lily in the Center of Its Universe
Oil 36" x 48"  painting size

I took the reference photographs for these floating flowers at the American Orchid Society of Palm Beach County. I love to paint flowers and water lilies are particularly interesting because of their proximity to water and the shadows and reflections that are created. "Water Lilly in the Center of its Universe" and "Two Water Lilies and their Reflections" are both larger than life and measure 36" x 48". The size is meant to make an impression on the viewer and lead them into the scene. The giclees are available.

Pink Lotus Water Lilly
Oil 36" x 42"  painting size

Pink Lotus and Two Nymphaeas were created as part of a commission. My client wanted to fill their new home with flowers.

When I found out what the subject was going to be, I discovered that the best place to photograph water lilies was McKee Botanical Gardens in Vero Beach. It is a remarkable place where a system of waterways interconnect. Every corner brings you to into contact with more lovely floating flowers. I was so excited when I got there that I practically ran from shot to shot. Painting was a pure color delight. The first painting is a portrait of a pink lotus. The second painting is a portrait of two Nymphaeas.
